Wood Restoration in Nocona, Montague County

Lake properties around Nocona — including Nocona Hills — have wood structures in constant contact with lake air. The combination of UV exposure and moisture from the lake surface accelerates greying and oxidation significantly compared to an inland deck. What looks like permanent weathering on a dock or deck is usually UV-oxidized surface wood — the brightener step in the restoration process reverses the grey and brings the natural wood tone back. We've done dock and deck restoration on lake properties throughout this part of Montague County. The two-step process matters: cleaning alone doesn't correct the pH imbalance that causes graying, but the brightener does. After restoration the wood is ready for stain or sealant — skipping that final protection step means the grey returns within a season.

The Process

How Wood Cleaning Works

Pre-wet surrounding vegetation

Before any cleaning solution goes on, we thoroughly wet all plants, grass, and beds in the spray zone.

Apply sodium percarbonate cleaner

The oxygen bleach solution goes on and dwells for 10–20 minutes. You'll see the grey start to lift and biological growth change color as it dies.

Low-pressure rinse

We rinse at 200–400 PSI, working with the grain. Stubborn sections get a second cleaner application rather than increased pressure.

Brightener application and final rinse

Brightener goes on immediately after rinsing while the wood is still wet. The color shift to golden-brown is visible within a few minutes. Final rinse, then we tell you the dry time before leaving.

Why Local Service Matters in Nocona

Wood Restoration — Nocona Specific

Nocona is close to home base — a quick trip from Montague. For lake community properties in the area, that proximity matters: wood restoration and exterior cleaning are jobs where a second visit is sometimes needed (lichen can take a follow-up to fully clear, for example), and we can do that without it becoming a half-day round trip. If you have a lake property with a wood dock or deck that needs work, that's exactly the kind of job we've built experience with in this part of Montague County.

Wood restoration is two steps, not one. Pressure washing alone cleans surface contamination but doesn't fix the grey oxidation — that's a chemical change in the wood, and it needs a chemical solution. The oxygen bleach cleaner reverses the oxidation. The brightener neutralizes what the cleaner leaves behind and opens the grain for stain penetration. Skip the brightener and the result is half as good. Skip the cleaner and the brightener has nothing to work with. We do both, in the right sequence, on every job.

Common Questions

Wood Restoration in Nocona — Questions & Answers

My dock is completely grey. Is wood restoration worth it at this point?
In most cases yes. Grey weathering is oxidation of surface wood fibers from UV and moisture — not structural damage. The oxygen bleach cleaner strips organic matter and the brightener neutralizes the oxidation, returning the natural wood color. If the wood has surface checks and minor weathering, that's normal and doesn't prevent restoration. Boards that are soft, cupped, or splintering may need replacement before we can get a consistent result across the surface.
How long after cleaning should a dock or deck be stained?
Within 2–4 weeks of restoration. The brightener opens the wood grain and the surface is maximally receptive to penetrating stain during that window. Waiting longer isn't disqualifying, but you'll get better stain penetration and a longer-lasting finish the sooner you apply it after cleaning.
How long after cleaning before I can stain?
Minimum 48 hours under dry, warm conditions. In North Texas summer heat that's usually enough. In fall or humid weather, give it 72 hours. The wood should read below 15% moisture content — a moisture meter from any hardware store gives you a definitive answer. Applying stain to damp wood is the most common reason deck stain peels within the first season.
Can you restore completely grey, severely weathered wood?
Usually yes, to a significant degree. The grey is UV oxidation of the surface, and oxygen bleach reverses much of it. Very old or severely weathered wood may not return all the way to new-wood color, but the difference after treatment is almost always dramatic. Deep checking — surface cracks from drying cycles — won't close from cleaning, but it doesn't affect function on structurally sound wood.
